Thirty Years War

Paint pens on print in tray frame

A hand-finished print (1/1) based on pages found defaced (2018) in a copy of The Early Modern World history textbook by C.F. Strong (1955) originally from City of Bath Girls’ School Library (1967).

This ensemble of portraits features the various leaders in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648); formal paintings of four men in the midst of a power struggle, all hoping to shape the world in their own image.

Fast forward 350 years to a school in England – in this moment of humorous vandalism, it is now a school girl who has power over them. In an artwork that has become a type of posthumous collaboration, their original marks have been accentuated in light blue – another layer of defacing has been added by the artist.
