Living Legacies is a touring portrait exhibition for Bristolian Ethnic Minority Elders, their lives, cultures and dedication to their community. Its aim is to provide a legacy to the elders, something they previously felt had alluded them.
When we think of legacy in art we think of grand portrait paintings and statues in public places, victories, remembrance, stature and even perhaps decadence.
So even though these unashamedly central portraits are modelled on paintings by Thomas Lawrence [no stranger to regal portraiture and the ultimate legacy hunters, the court] they are a gift of legacy to their subjects, rather than one which is paid for.
