George E. Mitchell Carvings
What started as a mission to document a collection of carvings turned in to an attempt to know a man I never knew through the things he left behind and the creation of a family heirloom.
George Mitchell was very much a maker of things. He made boats, tools and furniture, but his many carvings are the subject of this book. It aims to unify, contain and maintain their legacy whilst pondering the sensibilities of a maker – and how family history came to intersect with that of the Russell-Cotes.
Just as limited photographic editions look to maximise monetary value in each print, only 6 copies exist in order to maximise sentimental value in the book – all of which are in private collections.
The last physical copy was acquired by Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in February 2019 and is available to view in their Library.
